Paulina Babiak SEAS’19
你好! I am a junior in SEAS studying Chemical Engineering and minoring in Biomedical Engineering. I spent my Spring 2017 semester at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), in Hong Kong, a unique city where East meets West, and old meets new. While I took some mathematics courses, I used this opportunity to take classes about Hong Kong and China, to be able to appreciate the region as more of an insider than a foreigner. It was rewarding to observe and explain the reasoning behind the color-coded MTR (metro) stations after we just discussed it in the morning lecture. The most memorable and fond experiences I had in Hong Kong were making friendships with people, who despite being born and raised in a different hemisphere, became some of my closest friends. Learning about their interests, experiences, as well as points of view on political and socio-economic issues, enhanced my intellectual and cultural experiences. Despite all of our differences, we all came together over some delicious Dim Sum or KFC (Korean Fried Chicken!), roaming around the streets of Hong Kong, and even traveling to neighboring countries together (China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and Taiwan!). To any student considering study abroad: be open minded and don’t hesitate! If you have any questions about HKUST, Hong Kong, or anything else, please don't hesitate to contact me!
