Cheers! I am a senior at the School of General Studies majoring in Political Science. Before starting at Columbia I was a ballet dancer working in Norway, France, and Germany. I loved my experiences working in foreign countries and hoped to be able to study abroad too! However, as a non-traditional student I was not sure if I would be able to make that happen. Luckily, UGE was incredibly helpful walking me through the steps of the study abroad process, helping me find the right Columbia approved program, and showing me that it was possible. This past spring I spent almost four months in London at UCL in their Political Science department. It was amazing to be studying British Politics and be in the country when the UK left the European Union on January 31st. Also, I was able to take a graduate level class at the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose at UCL. That class, Rethinking Capitalism, completely changed the way I think about public policy and inspired me to pursue graduate studies. I was lucky to be able to live with friends in an apartment off campus. This meant I was immediately immersed in the diverse community of South London. On campus I joined an exciting group of students that come to UCL from across the globe as well as a large cohort of study abroad students. I loved getting to know London during my morning commute on a double decker bus that took me past Parliament on the way to UCL. I also enjoyed finding new study spots from cozy coffee shops, to the bookstore Waterstones, and even the British Museum’s library during my breaks. One of the highlights of my trip was spending time at Covenant Garden and attending a performance at the Royal Opera House. My foreign travels were cut short by the pandemic, but I am hoping to catch up on them once I graduate! Please feel free to reach out if you would like to talk about studying abroad, have questions, or plot out post pandemic travel. Email me with any questions!
