Attend Middlebury College at Universidad Carlos III to continue to enhance your language skills and understanding of the Spanish culture. In order to participate, you need to complete a minimum of one 3000-level Spanish course, or the equivalent, prior to departure. In addition, you select from a number of housing options available to you as a program participant.


The Middlebury program is for advanced Spanish students who would like to study at the Universidad Carlos III. As a participant, you take an advanced language content course in the "Sede Prim" which is Middlebury's Center located in the heart of Madrid. You also enroll in 3-4 courses (dependent on credits) directly at the university with local students. You can take a wide range of courses in areas such as: art history, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science and sociology.

To take full advantage of your time abroad, you are expected to maintain the spirit of the Middlebury College Language Pledge and speak only Spanish while in Spain.

Please note that the spring semester may extend into June.

Program Features

The university is located in Getafe, a suburb of Madrid approximately 30 minutes away from downtown Madrid by train. It was founded in 1989 and therefore has the conveniences of a modern university campus which include sporting facilities, green spaces and a performing arts center. The student enrollment is approximately 17,000 students.

You have three options for housing in the city center which include: carefully selected homestays, residence halls or shared student apartments.

Middlebury offer language tutors and partners in Madrid. They also have a wide variety of information about extracurricular opportunities for students from yoga to photography to travel.

  • To apply for program admission, complete an external application directly on the program webpage. Note that this deadline may be in advance of the Columbia clearance deadline.
