Middlebury School in Russia is not operating at the sites in Moscow, Irkutsk, and Yaroslavl for the foreseeable future. Middlebury has developed an alternative Russian language immersion program in Kazakhstan, and the program is in place for the Spring 2023 term. At Middlebury in Moscow, Russia you will have the opportunity to take a combination of courses at the Middlebury Center and various partner universities. This program is for students who are interested in gaining a high level of proficiency in the Russian language while developing a deeper understanding of the country's literature and culture. In order to participate, you need to complete a minimum of 4 semesters of Russian, or the equivalent, prior to departure.
You will take your courses at the Middlebury Center in Russian language, literature, and culture, with content seminars, "spetskursy", focusing on Economics, Politics, History, and Regional Studies. In addition, you also take courses at Middlebury's host institution, the Higher School of Economics (HSE) which offers a full range of courses in the social sciences. Students who have completed coursework in the same area of study may also choose to take some of their university courses at the Shchukin Theater Institute or the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU).
You live in a single room with carefully selected homestay families. Homestays allow you to have a higher level of cultural immersion during your semester abroad.
Participation in extracurricular pursuits is a major priority of the program. On-site staff and university faculty work actively to assist you in locating individual activities. The program strongly encourages you to pursue individual activities outside of classes.
