Attend the Smith College in Geneva program to take local university courses at Universitie de Geneve while living in a university residence hall. While the program only requires 2 semesters of French if you enter in the spring term, it is still strongly recommended that you complete 4 semesters of French prior to departure to maximize immersion and language learning while abroad. If you enter as an academic year student, you are required to have completed 4 semesters of French prior to departure.

The program begins with a three-week orientation including intensive French language study, culture and history courses, and excursions.

During the academic year, you take four courses per semester. You enroll with Swiss and international students in the francophone Université de Genève, the European Institute, and the Graduate School of International and Development Studies. While there are courses available in English at the university, it is strongly recommended that you take as many of your courses in French, as possible.

Please note that Columbia University currently only approves Track B at this time. Track A and C are not currently on the CU-Approved List.

Program Features

Fall or spring semester students occupy rooms in a residence in downtown Geneva or stay in a double room in a cozy women's residence, Home St-Pierre, located in a historic building on the cathedral square of the Vielle Ville (Old Town).

You can participate in day trips to places such as: the medieval Château of Chillon, the Swiss capital of Bern, the medieval French city of Yvoire and the Roman and medieval town of Nyon on Lac Léman. Smith also arranges a variety of cultural excursions around the city.
