Tuition: The program invoice will be sent via e-bill to your Columbia student account in the first week of June 2024 and will be due in the beginning of July 2024. It covers tuition, some course materials, and costs related to any program-related activities.

**Document (transcript) Fee: This one-time fee of $105 is charged to new students and is not included in the tuition above. This fee will be included in your e-bill. Barnard students might be charged this fee if they haven’t taken a course at Columbia before.

Deposit: All students are required to submit a non-refundable $1,000 deposit to reserve your place in the program and it will be applied towards your tuition.

Meals: The cost for meals and food will vary on your individual spending habits. Costs can be kept down by preparing your own meals and only eating out occasionally.

Housing: Most students will live in apartments, their housing fees will be paid directly to the apartment. No meals included. For any students placed in the dorm, they will be charged $1700 by UGE.

Local Transportation: You will be responsible for paying for transportation to and from the airport in Kyoto at the start and end of the program. Students should budget approximately ¥20,000 per month for additional transportation costs.

Visa: There are no Visa fees for US Citizens, and fees are waived for some 50+ nationalities found at the following link: http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/english/html/travel_and_visa/visafees.html.

Books and course supplies: Information regarding textbooks and other course materials will be distributed before the course begins.

Cell Phone: All students are required have a working cell phone capable of making and receiving both local and international calls throughout the duration of the program. This estimate is based on costs of U.S. cell phone plans.

Airfare: Estimated cost of round-trip airfare from NYC to Kyoto. Students are responsible for making your own travel arrangements from your preferred departure city to the program and can fly into any of the following airports: Kansai International Airport, Haneda or Narita.

Personal Expenses: Personal expenses are highly variable based on each person's spending habits. They may include entertainment and personal travel.


As part of the program, you will be covered for urgent and emergent care while you are abroad. This cost is not included in the chart above. Routine and preventive care is not included so you should maintain a health insurance policy that will provide coverage outside the U.S. or your home country.
