Overview

This study abroad program through IFSA allows you to take courses at the University of Sydney (USyd), Australia’s oldest university. You can take classes in a variety of subjects, alongside local students. You will live in an off-campus apartment complex or an on-campus residential college.

Academics

Founded in 1850, the University of Sydney is Australia's first university. Modeled after Oxford University, it is considered one of Australia’s most prestigious universities. Popular subjects include Architecture, Computer Science, Design and Planning, Economics, Engineering, English Language and Literature, History, Psychology, Politics, and International Studies. Some subjects have restrictions for visiting students, which you can view on the IFSA Butler website. You will take classes alongside full-degree local students. You will most likely take a traditional course load - four courses worth the equivalent of four Columbia points each.

You should note that the academic calendar in Australia varies significantly from that of Columbia University. Approximate dates are available on the IFSA website. IFSA does offer an early start/early depart option for USyd; you can find more information on our program page. However, you should carefully review the list of available courses for this option on the external program webpage.

Program Features

Sydney is a beautiful, cosmopolitan city with a variety of recreational and cultural opportunities. The University of Sydney campus is in Newtown, a student-friendly neighborhood known for its café culture. The campus is also close to Sydney’s central business district. The campus is modeled after Oxford University, with beautiful quadrangles and Gothic buildings.

You will live in an off-campus apartment complex or an on-campus residential college. As a visiting student, you will have access to the University’s student union, student clubs, and social activities. IFSA will provide administrative support for your experience. They will offer academic advising, an orientation, activities, and excursions.
