Overview

Attend Middlebury in Madrid to enhance your language skills and understanding of Spanish culture. In order to participate, you need to complete a minimum of 5 semesters of Spanish, or the equivalent, plus one content course taught in Spanish prior to departure.

Academics

In Madrid, you will have the option to:

  1. Take all courses at the Sede Prim, Middlebury’s headquarters in Madrid: All courses are taught in Spanish, and topics range from Language, Literature, to Culture. Visit the Sede Prim Course Offerings for more details.
  2. Take up to two courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM): UAM is one of the premier research universities in Spain. UAM offers courses in Biochemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Food Studies, Geography, History, Linguistics, Math, Music, and Psychology, among others.
  3. Take up to three courses at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M): UC3M offers a wide range of courses in Art History, Economics, Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science and Sociology. UC3M is a 40-minute train ride south of the Sede Prim.

To take full advantage of your time abroad, you are expected to maintain the spirit of the Middlebury College Language Pledge and to speak only Spanish while in Spain.

Please note that the Spring semester extends into early June due to final exams at UAM or UC3M.

Program Features

Middlebury hosts a wide variety of activities and extracurricular opportunities for students, from yoga to photography to travel. Middlebury also offers language tutors and partners to support you throughout your time abroad if needed.

Application Instructions

To apply, you must complete the two steps below. Deadlines vary, and some applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Therefore, you should complete the steps below simultaneously:

  • To apply for Columbia clearance (approval) to study abroad, click on "Start Your Application" on this webpage. Clearance applications are approved on a rolling basis until the application deadline listed on this webpage.
  • To apply for program admission, complete an external application directly on the program webpage. Note that this deadline may be in advance of the Columbia clearance deadline.
