Tuition: KCJS Consortium students from BU, Brown, Chicago, Cornell, Emory, UPenn, Stanford, Washington University in St. Louis will be billed by your home school at your school’s regular tuition rate. It covers tuition, course excursions, most course materials, some local transportation and cultural activities. It does not cover housing, meals, airfare, medical insurance, some course materials, personal travel, and personal expenses.

Program Fee: The program fee is payable online through your UGE application portal. The Program Fee covers housing, lunch stipend, transportation pass, and some activities during the semester. All students, except for those from Cornell and Washington University, must pay the $6,000 program fee each semester.

Tuition and fees are subject to approval by The Trustees of Columbia University and may change.


Estimated Out-of-Pocket Expenses are not billed by Columbia. The estimated amounts in this section provide a basis for students to determine their individual budgets for expenses related to their time overseas for the duration of the program. The below estimate is an average of what students say they actually spend. These expenses are NOT paid to the program.

Quarantine: The Japanese Government is currently requiring a two-week quarantine for all international travelers to Japan. KCJS will cover quarantine costs (accommodation and transportation) for all Fall 2021 students, but students will be responsible for meal costs.

Meals: The cost for meals and food will vary widely depending on individual spending habits. Students living in apartments will receive an ¥800 daily lunch allowance but must provide for their own breakfasts and dinners. Students should budget approximately $500 per month for meals not included in the program fee. *Estimated meal costs for the two-week quarantine period are TBD.

Housing: KCJS staff members place students in apartments and the cost is included in the Program Fee.

Local Transportation: Students will be given a $90 monthly transportation subsidy during the semester to cover transportation costs between their apartment and KCJS. Students should also budget approximately $150-200 per month for additional transportation costs.

Visa: There are no visa fees for US Citizens, and fees are waived for some 50+ nationalities found at the following link: http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/english/html/travel_and_visa/visafees.html.

Books and course supplies: Textbooks and other course materials will be distributed after the language placement exam in Kyoto.

Cellphone: All students are required to have a working cell phone capable of making and receiving both local and international calls throughout the duration of the program.

Airfare: At this time, you should not purchase an airline ticket, nor incur any expenses associated with the program until you receive specific instruction from your UGE study abroad adviser. You should not expect to be reimbursed for airline tickets or other program-related expenses should the program be canceled.

Personal Expenses: Personal expenses are highly variable based on each person's spending habits. They may include entertainment and personal travel.


It is required that you maintain a health insurance policy that will also provide coverage outside the U.S. for routine, urgent and emergent care. This cost is not included in our estimates.
