Spring 2023 Costs for Columbia in Kenya: Columbia Students

Tuition: You will pay Columbia’s home school tuition through SSOL. The spring tuition invoice will be sent via e-bill in early December and will be due mid-January. Please see the Tuition Rates and Fees on the Student Financial Services website for specific information about fees. Note that you should look at the pages for your home school (Columbia College, School of General Studies, Columbia Engineering) for accurate rates.

Program Fee: The program fee will be billed in SSOL along with your tuition via e-bill in early December and will be due in mid-January. The program fee includes the cost of room and board while abroad.

Flight Fee: This is the cost of the round trip flight from JFK to Nairobi (This does not include airfare to JFK from your home city). Students will meet at JFK and travel together. The flight fee is payable online through your UGE Application Portal.

Estimated Out-of-Pocket Expenses are not billed by Columbia.The estimated amounts in this section provide a basis for students to determine their individual budgets for expenses related to their time overseas for the duration of the program. The below estimate is an average of what students say they actually spend. These expenses are NOT paid to the program.

Visa: Students will apply for their visa online.

Books and course supplies: The cost is included in the tuition.

Cellphone: All students are required to have a working cell phone capable of making and receiving both local and international calls throughout the duration of the program.

Airfare to JFK: Students will arrive to JFK independently before flying to Nairobi as a group. The flight cost to JFK can vary depending on the student's home city. This fee is estimated and is based on a round-trip economy ticket price.

Personal Expenses: This includes allowances for out-of-pocket medical expenses, equipment, personal spending, tips, etc. This also includes $600 for the spring break trip to Mount Kenya (optional, but highly recommended), to be paid on-site.

It is required that you maintain a health insurance policy that will also provide coverage outside the U.S. for routine, urgent, and emergent care. This cost is not included in our estimates.
