Program Fee: The fee covers housing costs for students and will be paid in the student's study abroad account. The $500 deposit will be credited towards the program fee, so that the remaining balance $500 will be collected.
Deposit: All students are required to submit a non-refundable $500 deposit to reserve their place in the program; this deposit will be applied toward program costs.
ESTIMATED OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES are not billed by Columbia. The estimated amounts in this section provide a basis for students to determine their individual budgets for expenses related to the program. These expenses are NOT paid to the program.

Meals: During the program, students will have access to a kitchen in program housing. Students will take turns preparing food for the program participants, meaning most meals will be provided by the program. This estimate is for any meals or food purchased on program downtime.
Local Transportation: Transportation is provided for program acitivities. Any personal travel is not included in this estimate. This estimate cost is for air transfers while traveling to/from the program.
Visa Expenses: Since U.S. students do not need a visa to study in Japan for less than 90 days, the majority of students will not need a visa. However, if you are not a U.S. or E.U. citizen, you should check the Japanese Consulate website to determine if you need a visa. International students may need a visa, which will incur additional costs, including travel to visa application appointments.
Cell Phone: All students are required to have a working cell phone capable of making and receiving both local and international calls throughout the duration of the program. This estimate is based on the cost of getting a local sim card.
Airfare: Students book their own flights. Estimate based on departing from NYC.
Personal Expenses: Personal expenses are highly variable based on each person's spending habits. Any personal travel is not included in this estimate.
As part of the program, you will be covered for urgent and emergent care while you are abroad. Routine and preventive care is not included so you should maintain a health insurance policy that will provide coverage outside the U.S. or your home country. This cost is not included in the chart above.
