"Being able to study in Paris also helped me realize the differences in cultures and customs that exist outside of the United States – and how to be conscious and respectful of that."
The Global Learning Scholarship (GLS) was tremendously helpful in funding my summer abroad experience! Without it, I definitely would not have been able to spend an amazing month in Paris! Before I was awarded the scholarship, I was concerned about having to take out loans to pay for classes, as well as the financial strain it would have put on my family. The GLS gave me the security I needed to accept the study abroad offer – a program that I can easily say was one of the most memorable and exciting of my life!
Traveling around the world has always been a major goal of mine, especially in college! I saw the Mona Lisa with my own eyes (something that once felt unfathomable!), spent time writing in Parisian cafes, and found inspiration in the photography and activism of Marie-Laure de Decker at the MEP.
Being able to study in Paris also helped me realize the differences in cultures and customs that exist outside of the United States – and how to be conscious and respectful of that. Although knowing French was not required to participate in the program (and I didn’t know a lick of French), I still tried to make an effort to say bonjour or to ask comment ca va. During our orientation session it was expressed to us to be mindful of a language barrier, and to not assume that people would speak English. That we should lead with respect and good intentions when maneuvering through unfamiliar situations and places; to be aware of our privilege of being there, and to try to learn as much as we can, and be open to expanding our linguistic horizons – even if only to ask a stranger how they were doing. It set the foundation for conversations of the beauty of the city, as well as our roles as visitors.
My trip to Paris was also my first time leaving the country, and doing so alone. It furthered my confidence in my capability to handle myself, to navigate stressful situations like international customs and transportation. I feel as though this trip gave me hope for my future – I felt the potential possibilities unfurl before me as I wandered through museums. It inspired me to continue pursuing my passions, regardless of any outside opinions.
