Overview
Attend the CIEE China: Semester in Shanghai program to take classes in English at CIEE Shanghai or East China Normal University (ECNU) across a wide range of subject areas. Enhance your academic coursework while gaining insight into Chinese culture and society.
Although it is helpful, you do not need to have prior experience with the Chinese language in order to apply.
Academics
During the semester, you’ll take classes in English at CIEE Shanghai or East China Normal University (ECNU) across a wide range of subject areas, including History, Economics, Ecology, Psychology, Chinese Language Studies, and more.
Please note that students may choose to take ENCU courses taught in Chinese if the student shows proof of language proficiency, such as HSK Level 5, interview, professor recommendation, or the equivalent.
Program Features
You will have the option to live in campus residence halls with a CIEE roommate. Campus residence halls are located in neighborhoods with convenient access to CIEE Shanghai (a 10-minute walk).
Outside the classroom, you will participate in CIEE-organized co-curricular activities and excursions beyond the city to enhance class learning and gain intercultural understanding. You will also have plenty of free time to explore all Shanghai has to offer, from its architecturally stunning temples to its lush botanical gardens.

To apply, you must complete the two steps below. Deadlines vary, and some applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Therefore, you should complete the steps below simultaneously:
- To apply for Columbia clearance (approval) to study abroad, click on "Start Your Application" on this webpage. Clearance applications are approved on a rolling basis until the application deadline listed on this webpage.
- To apply for program admission, complete an external application directly on the program webpage. Note that this deadline may be in advance of the Columbia clearance deadline.
