Overview

The CIEE Jordan: Middle East Studies program in Amman focuses on immersing students in Middle Eastern history, culture, politics, and language study. Students will take a combination of courses at CIEE Amman Study Center and their partner school, Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT). Although there are no formalized language requirements to apply, you are strongly encouraged to have taken 2-4 semesters of Arabic prior to departure.

Academics

You will take both Modern Standard and Colloquial Jordanian Arabic (at your appropriate level) to advance your language skills further. In addition, you will take several elective courses that are taught in English at either CIEE Amman or PSUT. CIEE Amman offers a range of courses in fields such as Anthropology, History, Economics, Literature, Religion, Archaeology, Political Science, and more. Whereas PSUT provides studies focused on Economics.

Note that not all courses offered at PSUT can transfer to Columbia for credit.

Program Features

You can select to live in either a homestay or shared apartment with other CIEE students. Homestays are strongly encouraged to aid in Arabic language acquisition and intercultural communication and understanding.

The academic program is supplemented with excursions to Jordan's archaeological, historical, and natural wonders to bring your studies beyond the city and provide intercultural understanding.
