Broaden your horizons by studying at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) through the CIEE Spain: Advanced Liberal Arts Program. In order to participate, you need to complete five or more semesters of Spanish prior to departure. You take a combination of CIEE-run courses and local university courses throughout the semester. You have the option to live in a homestay, in a student residencia (residence hall) with other Spanish and international students or in a shared apartment.
If you are an independently-minded student with advanced language skills, this program is one to consider. You have the opportunity to take a wide range of courses at UB while also having the support network of CIEE. You are required to take either the Spanish Writing and Stylistics course or the Spanish for Heritage Speakers course, both of which are designed to prepare you for classes at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB). In addition, you take as many but no less than two direct enrollment courses at UB. Courses available at the Universitat de Barcelona cross a number of different fields including: Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Education, Geography and History, Hispanic Philology, International Affairs, Mathematics, Modern Languages and Literatures (Spanish), Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, and Psychology. To complete your schedule, you will take the remaining courses with fellow study abroad students at UB or at the CIEE Study Center, based on your language proficiency.
Please note that while CIEE Advanced Liberal Arts requires six semesters of Spanish, Columbia University students are eligible to apply with five or more semesters of Spanish. However, it is encouraged to have as much experience with the Spanish language prior to departure as possible.
As a program attendee, you are eligible to participate in a variety of cultural immersion opportunities. You choose to live in either Spanish homestays, in a student residencia (residence hall) with other Spanish and international students, or in a shared apartment. CIEE also offers a number of language partner activities throughout the semester.
