If you have completed five or more semesters, please review the CIEE Barcelona: Liberal Arts Program. The CIEE Liberal Arts program includes a combination of CIEE-run courses and local university courses at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). You should consider this program if you are a student interested in significantly improving your language skills while taking classes in Spanish history, politics, literature, and culture – all taught in Spanish. In order to participate, you need to complete through Intermediate Spanish II, or the equivalent, prior to departure.
Upon arrival to Barcelona, you complete an intensive Spanish language course that meets for the first few weeks prior to the start of the semester. You then take four additional courses throughout the semester that are taught at the CIEE Study Center or UPF. UPF offers direct enrollment courses with local students as well as Hispanic and European Studies Program (HESP) courses that primarily have international students in attendance. Based on your language proficiency, it is recommended to take one direct enrollment course at UPF, if possible; otherwise, you can take a blend of courses at the CIEE Study Center as well as UPF HESP courses. All courses are taught in Spanish. If you plan to study in the fall semester, please note that all courses will end in the middle to the end of December so that you are able to arrive back on campus during the spring term.
CIEE provides an array of cultural immersion opportunities throughout the course of the semester. You choose to live in either Spanish homestays alone or with another CIEE student, in a student residencia (residence hall) with other Spanish and international students, or in a shared apartment. These are located in urban settings throughout the city.
