"Without the help of my Global Learning Scholarship, I never would have been able to fall in love with this city."

I thought I was in love with New York, but as soon as I began to venture around Berlin, I realized I had found my city. As an English major and Visual Arts concentrator, I am always on the prowl for the latest and greatest in the art world. Given that Berlin is a hub for contemporary culture, when I heard Columbia was offering the Columbia Summer Core in Berlin: Art Humanities and Music Humanities program, I knew this was my study abroad dream come true. The program included countless museum and performance excursions, while simultaneously allowing me to explore and make friends.

The program's six-week curriculum was ideal. I was able to establish a routine and feel like I adequately had time to immerse myself in the city. The extensive outing schedule and city-centered projects further pushed myself and my peers to get a taste for how Berlin engages with the larger canon of Art and Music Humanities. While my heart will always be in NYC, I’m super excited to be moving to Berlin in December following the completion of my undergraduate coursework. There I’ll be continuing my personal art practice and creative endeavors, while applying to masters programs in Berlin.

Without the help of my Global Learning Scholarship, I never would have been able to fall in love with this city. I am so grateful for the incredible friendships I was able to make abroad and the ample free time to explore the city. I have so much support for my upcoming move, and I am invigorated by the enthusiasm of my new German friends and Columbia professors to make Berlin my new home.
