Participating in the Columbia Summer Research Practicum in Global Behavioral Science (GLOBES) program at The University of Cambridge—one of the most esteemed universities in the world—has been a transformative experience for me as an Israeli student. As a first-generation student whose grandparents escaped from Libya and Morocco after the Holocaust to Israel, being part of this initiative carries a deep sense of pride and significance. My family's history of resilience and survival has always been a source of inspiration for me, and to represent my country in such a prestigious setting feels like a testament to their legacy and the progress my generation has made.

After a challenging year at Columbia University, where I faced intense academic demands and the complexities of war back home, this opportunity offered me a fresh perspective and a renewed sense of purpose. The most rewarding aspect of the GLOBES experience was the exposure to a diverse group of students from various cultural backgrounds. Working collaboratively on research projects with peers from 26 different parts of the world was not only intellectually stimulating but also profoundly enriching on a personal level. This experience underscored the importance of global collaboration in addressing complex issues, an insight that will undoubtedly shape my future academic and professional endeavors.

One of the most memorable moments of my time in the program was becoming friends with a local molecular biologist who specialized in researching leaves. Our shared interest in the intersection of environmental studies sparked many fascinating conversations. One day, he invited my friend and I to visit the Cambridge University Botanical Gardens, where he passionately explained the intricate details of his research on leaves and how they contribute to our understanding of plant biology and climate change. Walking through the lush gardens, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the deep knowledge of our guide, was an experience that reminded me of the importance of interdisciplinary learning and the connections that can be made when we step outside our usual fields of study.
