"Each class gave me new insight into a huge variety of artistic mediums and eras...I gained a deep understanding of Venice’s rich historical and artistic heritage."

When I applied to Columbia College as a freshman, one of my reasons for wanting to attend was the prospect of studying abroad in Venice. When I found out I was accepted into Columbia's Summer in Venice program, it was like a dream come true. The opportunity to simultaneously study my major, art history, and my minor, Italian, made this the perfect fit for me. I had high expectations, but my experience over the six weeks far exceeded anything I could have imagined.

The main square in Venice called Piazza San Marco

Though I greatly enjoyed both the Italian food and people, the real highlight was the artistic immersion I was able to experience on a daily basis. As soon as I walked out of my apartment door each morning, there was art in every direction. Whether that was the beauty of a palazzo or crossing the Academia bridge on my way to class or entering one of over one hundred of Venice’s churches, the trip convinced me that Venice is indeed the most beautiful city in the world.

Even more enjoyable than my personal immersion was the time I spent studying Venice’s art together with my professors and classmates. Each class gave me new insight into a huge variety of artistic mediums and eras. There is enough art in Venice to fill a lifetime of study, but during my short six weeks there, I gained a deep understanding of Venice’s rich historical and artistic heritage. I am truly grateful for my time in Venice, which strengthened my passion for art and confirmed my commitment to its study and appreciation.
